Our area

There are many aspects of culture and health. In order to facilitate research in such a diverse area, the researchers must decide on a delimitation. We have chosen to describe this research with the aid of four focus areas: Medical Humanities, Global Health, Arts and Health and Conceptual Health Studies. These focus areas facilitate not just discovery of the necessary delimitation. They also in principle correspond to the organisation of similar centre education and institutes internationally.

We are far from the only ones who carry out research within culture and health. Actually, there are similar subject areas established in many universities worldwide. But the very concept of "culture and health" is not so common internationally. Instead, one often speaks about the four focus ares we have mentioned above. Here, we have collected research environments as both resources and inspiration for the work with culture and health.

If Medical Humanities concerns illness and health, physician and patient, hospital and medicine as cultural phenomena, Global Health focuses on how health depends on cultural and social factors such as gender, ethnicity, domicile, religion and economic status. Arts and Health mainly deals with the rehabilitating effects of artistic experiences and the practice of art. Conceptual Health Studies, finally, is a critical examination of what we mean by health and illness from a philosophical, artistic and theological perspective.
